Chromatic Aberration Effect and RGB Split Overlays

Chromatic aberration is what happens when a lens fails to focus all colours at the same point, leaving red and blue fringes at high-contrast edges. Editors recreate it on purpose because it makes footage feel gritty, retro or digital.

The look splits into two jobs. Offsetting the colour channels of your footage is an effect inside your editor. Adding RGB-split text, glitch bars and flickering accents on top is an overlay, and that part you can download here.

Applying it to footage

Most editors have a channel-offset or RGB split effect. Duplicate the clip, shift the red and blue channels a few pixels in opposite directions, and animate the offset on a beat for an impact hit. Keep the amount small; heavy fringing looks like a rendering error.

Adding overlay accents

A transparent glitch overlay with colour-split edges, scanline flicker or distorted text adds the same feel on top of any clip, in any editor, without touching the footage underneath.

Export ProRes 4444 for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro, and WebM with alpha for OBS and the web. Transparent WebM can show glow or shadow artifacts in CapCut, so preview it there first.

Pair it with glitch text

Titles with a chromatic split read as digital and urgent. Try the glitch text generator for a ready-made version.

Frequently asked questions

What is chromatic aberration in video?

+

It is a colour fringing effect where the red, green and blue channels are slightly misaligned, either from a real lens or added deliberately for style.

Can an overlay add chromatic aberration to my footage?

+

Not to the footage itself. A channel offset has to be applied to the clip with an editor effect. Overlays add RGB-split accents, glitch graphics and text on top.

Is the effect free?

+

A free account can download one Community asset per day with a watermark.

Which editors support it?

+

Any editor that supports alpha video can use the overlays; channel-offset effects for footage are built into most editors.
