Transparent Background Video: Formats, Editors and Free Assets

A transparent video has an alpha channel, an extra layer of data that says how see-through each pixel is. That lets you place the video over anything and see the background through the empty parts.

Not every format keeps alpha, and not every player reads it. Knowing which to pick saves a lot of black-box surprises.

Formats that support transparency

  • ProRes 4444: dependable in professional editors, large files
  • WebM (VP9) with alpha: small files, great for OBS and browsers
  • Formats like standard MP4 (H.264) do not carry alpha, so you get a solid background

Playing and editing

Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro read ProRes 4444 alpha. OBS and Chromium and Firefox browsers play WebM alpha. Safari's support differs, so provide a fallback when you embed transparent video on a website.

How do I make a video background transparent?

+

Export from a tool that writes an alpha channel into ProRes 4444 or WebM. Video Effect Vibe generates assets that way by default.

The player or editor ignores the alpha channel. Try another format or app.
