Green Screen Effects, Without the Green
Green screen overlays work by painting the background a flat colour and asking your editor to remove it. It works, but soft glows, smoke and fine detail pick up a green fringe, and every clip needs keying and cleanup.
A transparent overlay carries the transparency itself. Drag it above your footage and the background is simply not there, which is why it is the cleaner replacement for green screen elements like subscribe buttons, smoke and sparks.

9Green screen versus alpha channel
- Green screen: needs a keying effect, edges can look green, glows suffer
- Alpha channel: no keying, edges stay as designed, soft effects look right
- Alpha needs an editor that supports it; most professional editors do
When you still want green screen
If your editor cannot read alpha at all, a green background version is a fallback. For everything else, export ProRes 4444 or WebM with alpha.
Export ProRes 4444 for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro, and WebM with alpha for OBS and the web. Transparent WebM can show glow or shadow artifacts in CapCut, so preview it there first.
