How to Edit Text and Colors in DaVinci Resolve Templates

By Video Effect Vibe ·

To edit a Video Effect Vibe template, select its title clip on the timeline and open the Inspector. Change the text or color controls exposed by that asset, then review the animation. This requires an editable .drfx export installed in Resolve 21+, rather than a rendered WebM or ProRes clip. The distinction explains why some overlays have editable labels and others do not.

Check what the template actually exposes

Editable templates have a defined set of controls. In this export, supported text, color, number and on/off configuration fields can become Inspector controls, up to 20 in total. The available fields depend on the original asset. A lower third might expose a name, job title and accent color, while a subscribe animation might offer button text and background color.

This does not make every layer, font, image or animation curve independently editable. Configuration types that are not exposed retain their saved values. Before committing to a design, check whether its controls cover the changes you expect to make across future videos.

Change the text on the selected title instance

Place the playhead inside the title, select the title clip itself and open the Inspector's title controls. Replace a sample label with your wording. If you only see ordinary video transform settings, confirm you selected the installed title rather than a rendered movie or the footage underneath it.

Review both the shortest and longest text you plan to use. A compact name can fit neatly while a longer name wraps or collides with an icon. The component may adapt its layout, but that behavior is design-specific. If no font-size or width control is exposed, shorten the wording or adjust the design in the app and export again.

Check punctuation, capitalization and any characters outside the original example. Watch the full animation, not just its resting pose: text can fit when stationary but be clipped during an entrance. Never assume a successful text change guarantees every language or line length will work equally well.

Change colors and preserve readable contrast

Use an exposed color picker to change the field it controls. Where the field includes alpha, opacity is part of the color: a transparent background may be intentional, while zero alpha on the label can make it disappear. Change one field at a time if you are unsure which shape or text it affects.

Preview the result over both light and dark footage. A white label that looked clear on a dark preview may disappear over a bright wall. Keep a contrasting button background, outline or shadow if the design offers one. Check glows and semi-transparent edges in a short output render as well as in the viewer.

For a reusable brand treatment, write down your chosen color values and apply them to the relevant controls. There is no promise that one picker recolors every element. Several accents can be independently configured, and some colors may remain fixed in the source design.

Make a second version without rebuilding the animation

Add another instance of the installed title or duplicate the existing clip, then change its exposed values. A practical example is a lower third with one speaker's name and role in the first clip and another speaker's details in the second. Keep the visual style consistent while changing the information.

Check each instance after editing, and save the project. Keep the original .drfx package alongside your reusable project resources so another compatible editing machine can install it. A teammate needs access to the required resources and appropriate usage rights; the exported template is not a stock product you may freely redistribute.

When a change needs a new export

If you want to replace an illustration, choose a different font or redesign the motion and there is no corresponding exported control, return to the asset in Video Effect Vibe. Make the supported configuration change there, or refine the component, and export the updated design. Do not treat the Inspector as a full editor for the underlying source.

The animation keeps its source duration. Resolve can trim the title, but a shorter clip may cut off its exit. Changing a number labeled speed or delay only does what that particular component defines; it is not a universal duration control.

For assets you have already unlocked, the current purchase model allows repeat exports without buying the same unlock again. Check the quote shown in the app, especially when choosing a different Community asset. The export process may still need time to build the updated package.

Editing questions

Why can I change position but not text? You may have a rendered video, the wrong clip selected, or a title without an exposed text field. Verify the asset's editable controls and download format.

Can I edit the font in every template? No. Do not infer font editing from an editable text field. Only use controls actually present in the exported title.

Why does the result look slightly different from the app? Resolve and the browser can use different rendering engines. Review the exported graphic in your actual project, particularly typography, shadows and transparency, before final delivery.
