How to Install DaVinci Resolve Templates (.drfx)
By Video Effect Vibe ·
A DaVinci Resolve template lets you reuse an animation without rebuilding it for every edit. This guide covers installing a .drfx package, finding the title in Resolve, and checking that its editable controls work. For Video Effect Vibe exports, you need Resolve 21 or newer on macOS or Windows because the graphics use OGraf.
Check the template requirements first
The .drfx extension identifies a template bundle; it does not guarantee compatibility with every version of Resolve. Older bundles may contain Fusion compositions, while a Video Effect Vibe bundle contains an OGraf graphic and its supporting resources. Installing the package in an older Resolve version will not add OGraf support.
Check your Resolve version in the application's About dialog. Blackmagic documents OGraf support in Resolve 21 on macOS and Windows. These instructions do not cover Linux. Keep the downloaded package and a copy of your project so you can reuse the same template later.
1. Download the editable template
Open your asset in Video Effect Vibe and choose DaVinci Template from its download options. For a Community asset, sign in and use its DaVinci export action, or add it to your workspace first. Review the export price and accept the applicable license when prompted.
Wait for the .drfx download to finish. A ProRes .mov or WebM download is a rendered video, not this editable package. Those files can be useful overlays, but importing them will not give you text and color fields in the title's Inspector. If editable export reports an unsupported component, resolve that error or choose another asset before continuing.
2. Install the .drfx package
Open Resolve, then double-click the downloaded .drfx file in Finder or File Explorer. Resolve should ask whether you want to install the bundle. Confirm the installation. You do not need to extract the package or copy its JavaScript and font files into separate folders.
If the operating system does not open the file with Resolve, use Open With and select DaVinci Resolve. Resolve also supports dragging a .drfx package into the Fusion page to start installation. If an existing package triggers an overwrite prompt, replace it only when you intend to install the newer copy. Keep the old download if an existing project depends on it.
3. Find the title and add it above your footage
On the Edit page, open Effects and look in Titles for the installed asset. Search for its title if you do not see it immediately; Video Effect Vibe packages are organized under a VideoEffectVibe.com folder. Drag the title onto a video track above your footage and move the playhead inside it.
Select the title clip and open the Inspector. Look for the controls exposed by that asset, then change one text field or color and check the viewer. Scrub through the entrance, middle and exit of the animation. The title has the source asset's duration; trimming it shorter can cut off the exit animation.
If the template is missing or the viewer is blank
First clear any search filter in Effects and confirm that installation completed in the Resolve version you are using. Save your work and restart Resolve if the new title has not appeared. A template belongs in Effects; you should not expect the .drfx installer itself to behave like an ordinary movie in the Media Pool.
For a blank viewer, check that the title is enabled, the playhead is inside its duration and any exposed opacity is above zero. Place it over visible footage to distinguish a transparent frame from missing output. Verify Resolve 21+ before reinstalling repeatedly.
If a font or resource error remains, download a fresh package from the current exporter. Report the asset name, Resolve version, operating system and exact error message. Avoid deleting all your installed effects to fix a single title. For a deadline, a rendered ProRes overlay is an alternative, but its text must be changed before rendering.
Installation questions
Do I need to install OGraf separately? Resolve 21 includes OGraf support. This export packages the graphic's resources for playback; it is not an additional AI plugin installation.
Does every .drfx template need Resolve 21? No. Follow the requirements of the particular template. The Resolve 21 requirement here applies to Video Effect Vibe's OGraf exports.
Can I move the template to another editing computer? Keep the downloaded package, install it on the other compatible computer and verify the project there. Sending a project alone should not be treated as a substitute for installing its template resources.
