ProRes 4444: Transparent Overlays for Professional Editing
ProRes 4444 is an Apple codec used in post-production. The four 4s stand for full-resolution luma, both colour channels and an alpha channel. In short, it is the format editors reach for when an overlay has to stay transparent without surprises.
Video Effect Vibe exports every asset as ProRes 4444 as well as WebM, so one overlay serves both your edit and your stream.

10Why choose ProRes 4444
- Alpha is supported in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro
- High colour fidelity, so gradients and glows stay smooth
- Frame-accurate scrubbing, which is friendlier to editing than long-GOP codecs
The trade-off is file size
ProRes is an editing codec, so files are larger than WebM. For short overlays of a few seconds this rarely matters. For anything going into OBS or onto a web page, WebM is the lighter choice.
How to use a ProRes 4444 overlay
Import the .mov file, drop it on a track above your footage and trim it. The alpha channel is read automatically. If you ever see a black background, check that the clip was exported as ProRes 4444 with alpha and not a format without it.

Frequently asked questions
Does ProRes 4444 support transparency?
+
Yes. ProRes 4444 can include an alpha channel, which is why it is a standard choice for overlays, titles and graphics in professional editors.
Is ProRes 4444 better than WebM?
+
They suit different jobs. ProRes 4444 is better for editing in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro. WebM is better for OBS and the web because the files are much smaller.
Can I use ProRes 4444 on Windows?
+
Yes, in editors that can read it, such as Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Playback support in basic media players is more limited, so preview inside your editor.
Can I download ProRes 4444 overlays for free?
+
A free account can download one Community asset per day with a watermark, in WebM or ProRes 4444. Downloads paid for with tokens have no watermark.
Can I generate my own ProRes 4444 overlay?
+
Yes. Describe the overlay, generate it with a token pack, and export it as ProRes 4444 with alpha.
